A Mid-17th Century Pierced And Chiseled Steel Hilted Transitional Rapier, Italian Circa 1640.
33 inch pierced rapier style blade. The blade with pierced short single fullers. The clamshell guard pierced and chiseled in high relief with grotesque masks and foliage. Quillon block and ‘D” guard chiseled with trophies of arms, strap work, and foliage. Grip is of spirally writhen ebony without binding. Pomme of globose form chiseled ensuite.
Condition of blade is patinated with considerable wear. Hilt with minor wear and cleaned to natural steel color. Grip is good with one minor crack. Pommel is very good with little wear.
Transitional rapiers became fashionable in the first quarter of the 17th century and are the forbears of the 18th century small sword, required wear for all gentlemen both in Europe and the New World. This is a very attractive rapier with wear as noted. The quality of the chiseling is fine. Almost 40 inches overall.
